A Stitch in Time

It's easier to build up a child than repair an adult.  Dr. Edwin Lee reminds us of this as he takes care to inform our most precious resources, our children, about the benefits of taking care of their hearts. With the obesity epidemic on the rise, our children's life expectancy won't even be as long as ours!  That's unheard of!  How did that happen?

We can blame Big Food as they maximize profits at the expense of our sugar addicted children.  Stronger than heroin, if you get 'em hooked early, a lifetime of profits awaits you.  Then there's the countless dollars spent to treat our pre-diabetic and diabetic offspring. We can blame computers, for keeping our little cybernauts entertained for countless hours, instead of where they should be - out playing and getting exercise.  But, more important, we need to take action and reverse this frightening trend.  It's not too late! Youth is resilient and flexible and the time to launch them on the right path is right now!

Dr. Lee's book, “Your Amazing Heart,” is a charming story, illustrated and written in a style that will certainly appeal to your children.  He takes them through the critical steps to maintain a healthy heart, developing good habits, so they grow into thriving adults avoiding the pitfalls that steal their health insidiously, over time.

They'll learn a lot by reading this book:

  1.   What's an age appropriate heart rate?

  2.   Secrets to maintain a healthy heart

  3.   What happens over time if they are not taking care of themselves

  4.   Healthy snacks that keep them balanced

As guardians of our youth, we owe it to them to set them on the right path, and and launch them toward a bright future. This book, with its illustrations and clear cut advice will bridge the gap for you and teach you how to talk to your kids.

Our children are our future!  As they embark on a journey toward adulthood that's far more complex than anything we've ever experienced, they need all the advantages they can get. It's up to us, as their guardians, to make sure this happens.  What greater reward is there in life than to see your children succeed? Don't waste another minute!  Get a copy of “Your Amazing Heart” and set them on the right path today!

Book of the Month, February-March 2014

For this health and fitness blog of mine I’ve reviewed cookbooks, self-help books, books on weight training, a variety of diets, psychology, and more. But this is the first time I’ve ever reviewed a children’s book.

And why not? I used to be a child. I’ve been a voracious reader all my life (which started when I was a child), and though I don’t have children of my own, I am an aunt to 4 and a stepmom to a teenager. I hereby deem myself qualified to love this book.

Your Amazing Heart combines three of my loves: reading, learning, and health. I picked up Your Amazing Heart initially because, like a youngster drawn to bright colors, I noticed the cover; awash in my two favorite colors, purple and orange. I took a closer look and recognized the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards sticker on the cover something I often look for when buying books for my nephews. They’re renowned for “Celebrating Youthful Curiosity, Discovery and Learning through Books and Reading,” (as their tagline proclaims.) Given the state of children’s health in this country, with the CDC reporting more than one third of children and adolescents as being overweight or obese in 2010, I thought it more than worthy of my attention. Plus, I had a feeling I was going to like it.

So, Dr. Edwin Lee, MD, a Florida-based Endocrinologist and Jim Huth, a writer specializing in marketing communications, came together to write a children’s book? Interesting collaboration. Your Amazing Heart describes the workings of the human heart muscle and how miraculous it truly is. It vividly demonstrates what can go wrong if the heart isn’t cared for or is “mistreated.” They also lay the foundation for lifelong health habits that can’t start soon enough in my opinion.

If you ever want to revisit the human body to understand the miracle that it is, read a children’s book about it; it will teach you this. The wise among us know that to teach or explain something well, one should be able to break the subject down to a level that a child can understand. Dr. Lee and Mr. Huth have done a beautiful job accomplishing just that. Complete with valves and ventricles, the book even features a little quiz at the end-so you won’t forget what you learned.

Your Amazing Heart reveals 3 secrets for having a healthy heart and what happens when we don’t take care of our heart the way we should. The illustrations are incredible (thank you Bryan Burright) and convey, at least to me, a sickening feeling as you see the smiling, happy faces of the children, growing up to be frowning, fat, and frumpy adults and then what frowning, fat and frumpy look like on the inside. There is little doubt that even a young child wouldn’t come away from Your Amazing Heart not understanding what mounds of sugar, little exercise, and no vegetables can do to a person. I won’t ruin the ending but let’s just say, it’s never too late to take care of your body.

Of course, I must point out page 17 where the little heart demonstrates a nice dumbbell overhead press, page 23, a bicep curl and on page 27, a tearful, bent over row. All the illustrations were great but these three hold a special place in my heart (pun intended), for obvious reasons.

This is to be the first in a series of books about health and Dr. Lee’s Health Secrets. I suggest you get them all. If not for your kids, by all means, for yourself. Dr Seuss himself famously said, “you have ‘em, I’ll entertain ‘em.” Your Amazing Heart does that and something more-it teaches young people to respect their miracle of their own bodies.
